The Cosmic Compass

It’s narrow bars depicted an eight-pointed star, as if each pie segments wore a triangular cap. Together with the star at its core, they were supposed to evoke the nine boughs of the Livingtree. Where, it is said, the gods sojourn at whiles, taking in the lives of their creations.

Readers from all five lands and seven seas will recognize this motif ... It’s called a compass because it’s said to chart our ethical choices in these mortal fields.

The 1° Ring looked like the caldera of an enormous volcano. It grew increasingly steep as I approached the massive stone ramparts that had been built atop it. They protected Monzoto on all sides, through land and sea. It was in fact a vast crater, created when the Starstone fell from the sky and broke the world.
